What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy is a widely accepted and effective treatment for a variety of mental health challenges and diagnoses, including anxiety, stress, depression, PTSD and emotional regulation.
Where counselling and psychology promote verbal - based therapy, art therapy prIorities art making as the primary mode of communication. The art therapist does not psychoanalyse the work, but instead supports and assists the client to discover their own meanings in their creation.
Art therapy is a worthy stepping stone for those that may reject traditional counselling or who struggle with an institutionalised, medical model. It is a dignified alternative that is client - led, that meets each individual where they 'are'. As a client - led practice, your story remains your own.
It is a safe alternative that fosters emotional intelligence and healing through meaningful connections and creative interventions founded in evidence - based care.
One of the most often asked questions is…
do I need to be good at art?
The answer is no. Art therapy is not about skill. Within an art therapy context, art making is used as a tool of discovery, to encourage curiosity, improve lateral problem solving and build meaningful connections with oneself and others. In a short time, I have witnessed true transformations born of creativity, empathy and resilience, where a strengthening of one's emotional intelligence promotes personal healing and improved wellbeing.
